GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

I just got my Dear John letter in the mail:

"This letter is intended to make you aware that your vehicle could develop a condition where one or more of the instrument panel gauge needles may stick, flutter, or become inoperative. This may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and the fuel gauge.

GM is providing owners with a special coverage that extends the warranty on the instrument panel cluster for the condition described above. If this condition occurs on your 2004 model year Chevrolet Silverado within 7 years of the date your vehicle was originally placed in service or 70,000 miles, whichever occurs first, the condition will be repaired for you at no charge."

Sounds like the cheap way out of a recall. Has anyone else received a similar letter for other model years?

Re: GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

I got the letter about a week ago. My 03 had 160k on it when I had to pay 400.00 to get it fixed. I sent the reimbursment info to GM anyway just to see if they will pay up for something that should have been recalled a long time ago.

you talk abut nice. you ever lose your gages on a 3k trip. its not fun when you see signs next gas station 150 miles away. you can not tell how fast your going and every dealer you stop in wants 600+ and a week for the parts.

Re: GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

Are 2002 Silverados covered under this IPC warranty? I found the TSB online for the '03-'04 models IPC, but no mention of '02s. Had my IPC replaced in Sept. '07 at 60K mi., the speedo and fuel gauge would drop out momentarily and the dash warning icons would light for a sec. or two. Dealer cost $450. I'm feeling ripped off now.

Re: GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

well I called 1 dealership, they said there was no recall, and unless I got a letter, and my numbers match they wont replace it (for free). Then I called another and they made an appointment for me, but I forgot to ask if it was free... we'll see here soon. 05' with 53k

Re: GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

I got my letters for both of my 03, 2500hd 1500z71. I havent replaced the 1500 cluster but the stepper motors have made a noise since about 5,000 miles and I have all the original paper work from dealer, my 2500hd speedo died at 55,000 miles. I took that one to the dealer , they wanted $600 to replace it. I bought a new one and did it myself. sent the paper work in for reinbursement on the 2500hd and was turned down, on both of them. I had all the work orders and everything and they said no sorry we are not reinburseing you or fixing the 1500. I also work for GM so I am not to happy with them on this.

My '02 Silverado 1500 had intermittent dropping out of gauges and dash icons lighting randomly, usually after 20-30 min. drive time. The battery also began draining within a day. The dealer did diagnostics and replaced the instrument cluster w/ a reman unit to the tune of over $450 parts and labor but the problem persisted. They wouldn't back up their work and said the warranty didn't cover an '02 model although the TSB said some later '02 models could have been involved.....you might say it was a real cluster f**k. I then started testing on my own, first I did an engine off amp draw test on the alternator, it checked ok. I checked all fuses for amp draw 10-15 minutes after shutdown. I found the instrument cluster/ radio/ heater control circuit was drawing after shutdown. After eliminating each component.... radio, heater and cluster by unplugging, I found it drawing through the instrument cluster. While I can't say for sure, I believe the problem was actually a bad ground, there's over 10 grounds on that truck and most were very badly corroded. In the meantime I also removed a suspect aftermarket remote starter and found some bundled wires chewed by mice in the fenderwell electrical center under the fuse blocks that might have compounded the problem. Scented dryer sheets will keep mice from the electrical center box. I also put a scented dryer sheet under each fuel injector rail too as mice will build nests there too w/ the firewall insulation. The dealer service dept. will never see my truck again, they were crude n rude....and I'm a GM employee. I can well understand now why the general buying public can get turned off by GM service and looks elsewhere. Good luck w/ your '03.

Re: GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

Does the replacement cover the truck if you are not the original owner? I bought mine used from a Chevy dealer.

Re: GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

I was going to start a new thread and immediately came across this one. Tonight, after having new brakes and some other minor repairs made on my 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora V8, as I was driving down the street, suddenly my gas gauge, tach, speedometer, etc. all began to slowly drop to zero. My turn signals show four-way flashers when turned on, yet they work outside. I have no odometer. Is this what has happened to all of you? What type of fix did you guys have to go through? Thanks.

Re: GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

I've got an 03 Silverado and the speedo bounced for a week or so then completely shut down about 3 months out of warranty (only 22,00 miles),The dealer I bought the truck from said tough "luck". They also jacked me on my steering shaft clunk. They show they had installed it, but what happened was they had ordered my shaft and installed it on somebodys truck under my VIN. Any way....just last month, I went in to another dealer (their competition) told them my tale, and they replaced both NO charge, NO BS. You wanna guess where I'll be buying my next GM?

Re: GM Extends Instrument Panel Cluster Warranty

I would confront dealer #1 with this info, see what they have to say for themselves, if any of this was actually under some extended special warranty, especially the cluster, they have some questions to answer. Closing this thread now, it is getting old.
