'95 suburban a/c

I just bought a '95 suburban. First large Suv I've owned. The a/c compressor seems to be much louder than on any other vehicle. It is also much bigger. Is this common with these compressors, or is it going out? It does not get hot as though there is internal failure. Any info would be nice. thanks.

Is this an A6 compressor or the R4?

have the pressures tested and if necessary recharge and add 4 oz of refrigerant oil...use the correct refigerant /oil is very important...


low oil/refrigerant will cause the compressor to make more noise.

Your R-4 compressor probably has internal aluminum yoke wear.. you can tell by checking the rotational lash - with engine off- see how much rotation you get by gently rocking the clutch on the compressor back and forth rotationally- If you have rear air option- (you probably do) then there was a TSB to reposition the rear TXV sensing bulb- to not allow liquid refrigerant to enter the compressor from the rear system- liquid creates early wear on the aluminum yokes inside the compressor and the subsequent lash and associated noise. I've seen a bunch of these...A new compressor will quiet it down, but without the TSB enacted, you will soon have the wear and noise return.
