'97 escort chattering

'97 escort 5 speed manual
today it started making a clanking or chattering noise whenever it's in gear. If it's in neutral it's fine, just does it when I slip it in gear. I can't really hear it when driving and it is shifting good, and is driving fine. I just wondering what the noise might be.

I don't get it...
No noise in neutral.
No noise when driving.
So just when exactly is there noise? At a stop, in gear with foot on clutch?
Can you feel vibration? Does it sound like it is from the engine or from under the car?

Re: '97 escort chattering

If it just does it with the clutch pedal pushed then it might be a throwout bearing.

It's only when the clutch is pushed in so I guessed it was the bearings. Here's the thing, I got the part, spent a few hours friday night and most of saturday taking everything apart but couldn't get the tranny to drop like I needed it to so I decided to take it somewhere. I called one place and they will replace the bearings, and plates for $500 parts and labor so I figured I'd go ahead and do that. Today I finally got everything back in, cranked it to move it over in the driveway, and the damn thing isn't making the noise anymore when I push in the clutch! Drove it down the road and back, nothing! So should I just leave it until it does it again, or just spend the money and get it fixed?

Yeah, I called the transmission place today and they said drive it until it makes the noise again and then bring it in.

Sounds like a good plan

That's about the best price I've found by anyone that has been recommended to us. And they said if we have it up to them first thing that morning, we could have it back later that day. So now we're just waiting to see when it decides to make the noise again. I'm driving it this week to and from work for my wife and she is driving my dad's car since it's easier for her to do her work out of a car rather than my Jimmy. I've only driven it today and so far it's fine but we'll see the rest of the week. Just pissed me off that I spent my whole weekend trying to get the tranny down, couldn't, put it back together and the noise was gone.
