94 SE High Idle/Car quits after a while... HELP!!

We have a 94 Grand Prix SE that has had both transmission and fuel system problems in the past. Now it is quitting on us and running high idle. We also smell gas in the car when it quits on us and sounds like it is rumbling or thumping underneath the hood of the car. I don't know where to begin but could someone offer advice?

Is the check engine light on, and if so, what codes are stored?

The check engine light wasn't on, but we took it to the shop to get fixed and I guess it had to do something with a fuel/air regulator and fuel was leaking onto the spark plug and into the oil, but it is repaired now.
