1996 Altima Won't Restart when HOT

My 1996 Nissan Altima with 93K miles had problem starting hot after long drive about 1-2 hours then becomes shorter about half hour as problem becomes worst. The car would not start and would even dies after restart after a long drive after the engine becomes hot. I would have to wait for 2-3 hours for engine to cool for the car to be able to restart and would dies afterward if not left to cool long enough. Left overnight to cool and restarting the car was never a problem. Light seems ok so I didn't think it was the battery or alternator problem. Found similiar problem at about.com and the answer given was the power transistor or distributor problem.

Did a search online and figured it might be the Power Distributor problem. Mechanic said it was because the distributor had a leak and oil was leaking into it. Replaced with New one for $320 for parts and labor (part at rockauto.com for $100) and seems to work so far with restart without a problem after car was left on for one hour.

P.S.: People that raise the question should update with anwer to their problem. I found many had similiar problem online but never took the time to update their situation. Thanks.

Re: 1996 Altima Won't Restart when HOT

According to my Hayne's manual, there could be 1 of 4 things wrong:

1. Air Filter Clogged
2. Fuel not reaching the fuel injection system
3. Corroded battery connections, especially ground
4. Faulty coolant temperature sensor or intake air temperature sensor

I would check 1 and 3 since these are the quickest things to check. By the way, do you have a service engine light on?
