96 jetta trek 2.0 won't fire...what i know so far...please

it's freezing cold
*everything was fine the day before
*car will not even sputter even with starting fluid....i've read that if it won't do anything with starter fluid that the problem is electrical
*coil is newer and spark is good all the way to the plug...can't remember what color but i seemed satisfied with it
*fuel came out of the line in a good stream with ignition on...before the fuel regulator....sorry no fuel pressure test yet
*#1 plug was not overly wet ....i'm wondering about the injectors being plugged among other things
*what is and where is the ECU module....seems like it would be a cheap fix but don't know if that's it
*don't know about the timing belt.....would compression test reveal a broken or skipped belt....i would think yes???
*it's freezing cold and snowing
*i need help...anything...even questions

If the spark was orangish, then you have a weak spark. The spark should be a bright bluish color. Check the inside of the distributor cap and rotor for corrosion and cleanliness. If the plugs are wet you are getting fuel but no spark. Can you remove enough of the timing belt cover to check it ? If it is your timing belt, bad news. Yours is an interference engine meaning that the pistons may have hit the valves.

i'll check the cap and rotor....actually i'll just get new ones and swap them out....i think i remember a blueish spark from the coil wire (at least a half inch jump)and definitely whiter (maybe one half inch jump) at the plug end after it came out of the distributor ..i always have to kick myself when i don't collect enough info so thanks for your patience.....but...a weak spark and not a cough with ether???...that's pretty weak...could you recommend a plug wire set because those have never been changed.....due after 145,000 i suppose...thank you...this car is 60 miles from me and with the holidays (a good one for all) i may not get at this thing right away but will try to track you down or maybe you can keep an eye out for me...thanks again
