How Can I Test a clutch for Slippage?
I'm looking to buy a '06 Elantra and just test drove a '06 Elantra Hatchback Limited GT w/ 51K miles on it. The clutch seems weak. How do I test it for slippage? How much does it cost to replace it? I notice a number of posts re: clutches and Elantras. Are clutches a problem with this car? Should I also post this question in another forum?
I curently drive a Saturn with 121K miles and the Elantra clutch "feels" the same as the Saturn clutch. |

Re: How Can I Test a clutch for Slippage?
To test it--get going about 30mph or so and shift into 5th gear. Give it some gas and see if the revs go up but the speed doesn't. If the speed just climbs slowly along with the revs it's not slipping. If the revs go up but your speed doesn't, or the revs go up then back down, it's slipping.
Elantras aren't known for clutch problems, but I wouldn't say they have a great clutch feel either.
