98 GTP Ticking after changing CPS
Well, after changing the crankshaft position sensor I am now getting a ticking coming from the same area of the motor. It is not a pinging, and is not rod knock nor knock retard as I know what both of these sound like. This sound I have never heard before and I was hoping for some input on the issue.
The sound presented itself immediately after I changed the CPS and comes from the same side of the motor. You can hardly hear it if you're walking up to the car from the driver's side but from the passenger side it's very noticeable. The noise is always present even at idle and the speed of the ticking increases with RPM. I first thought that it was the teeth behind the harmonic balancer hitting the dust shield for the CPS because I messed the shield up a bit trying to get it off...but I'd think that after 700 miles, the metal teeth would have worn away any plastic making contact with them by now. And to help any of you wondering what the ticking sounds like...I'd have to describe it as sort of like having a card in a bicycle wheel. I've briefly looked in the area the noise is coming from but couldn't really see much and there's not any empty lifts at the shop I have access to so...hopefully someone else in here has also had this issue or perhaps would have a good idea of what the problem is. Thank You in advance! And btw...the car is stock except for intake.(<-I just love the whine) Here's a link to a video I took with sound that's pretty accurate to what I hear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OyV5-o-dRg Last edited by warman724; 12-02-2008 at 05:36 PM. |

Re: 98 GTP Ticking after changing CPS
did you take any exhaust manifold bolts out? i know on some you have to remove the exhaust manifold to get to the CPS. i havent done a CPS on a 3800 yet.
sounds to me that you have an exhaust leak.

Re: 98 GTP Ticking after changing CPS
The CPS on your car isn't an adjustable gap type like older 3800's, so I would bet it's the balancer reluctors striking the CPS. Did you possibly bend one of the metal reluctors when R&R'ing the balancer? I bet if you take it back apart, you'll see where it's hitting.

Re: 98 GTP Ticking after changing CPS
No, I didn't have to touch the exhaust whatsoever and I did take special care as to not damage the balancer but perhaps something did happen during reinstallation. But as both the sensor itself as well is the cover that goes over it are plastic...wouldn't you think that whatever plastic, if any, making contact with the balancer, would have been worn away after 700 miles of driving?

Re: 98 GTP Ticking after changing CPS
Immediatly after I replaced mine I also noticed a slight tick. It went away after a day or two. I guess I forgot about it untill right now. My sound was a very very faint woosh woosh woosh that also increased with engine rpm.
Are you sure the rubber on your balancer hasn't been rotted away? Maybe changine the CPS you disturbed the balancer and completly broke the rubber apart. Is there any way we can get a sound or video clip?

Re: 98 GTP Ticking after changing CPS
Here, I took the video from the inside because the one from the outside I took was too muffled. But I think you can get a pretty good idea of what it sounds like. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OyV5-o-dRg

Re: 98 GTP Ticking after changing CPS
Wow, yeah, mine wasn't that bad. I could only slightly hear mine if I crouched down by the passenger side tire. Mine only made sort of a shoosh shoosh shoosh that I attributed to the new permenant magnet sensor. Mine went away within a day or so.
If I were you, I'd have to pull that baby apart and see whats hitting. It almost sounds like the balancer is coming apart. Remove both your belts and see if the sound changes.
