HOW TO: dying plastic parts (if anybody cares)

These are a couple pics of me dying a couple parts on my car. I used RITZ clothes dye. The powder form one package (liquid can be used the same way), one gallon of water (more can be used to cover parts), a pan. Mix dye and water in pot, heat about half or med temp on the stove for about 5 mins to mix dye. Reduce temp to about the low/med setting (a little more than 1/4). For Black that I did keep it in for about a hour on that temp. Pull parts out rinse in cold water and wipe down. MAKE sure you clean parts good with soap and water before you dye. Also If you have lots of parts or are doing parts that will be close together, like the center vents, do them at the same time so the colors will match.

door handle back plate (was grey like the handle)

center vent cover (was blue from a dx)

dye and pan

We dyed our safety goggles in science class on time with a process similar to that. To me it seems much better than painting it. But it seems you can only go darker and not really lighter.

You threw the parts into the pot on the stove?

My girlfriend thinks I'm obsessed as it is, I could just see her coming through the door I'm by the stove - "whats for dinner hun?" - "A couple of dyed air vents and door handle plates". *girlfriend slowly backs out and closes door*

Neat idea though. I seen a pic where someone painted/dyed a few parts of their dash blue and it looked really nice:

(I think it's painted/dyed, maybe he just swapped parts with a dif color civic?)

Joey.

The nice thing about dye compared to painting is you can clean the snot out of it and the color will not come off.

If you find a pot big enough you could do the center peice. Im thinking a deep frying pot for turkeys. There about 30-40 for a pot that big but may be worth it.

On the paint thing you can try boiling them. If the paint is chiping that means the paint is not adhering to the plastic and if you boil it you will expand the plastic and make the paint really soft. Just a thought would not hurt to try it.
