Question oil change interval?

Just wondering what oil change interval everyone uses?

I was having it done every 3000 miles by the dealer ( $19.95, I figure $10 - $12 for parts, I'm only paying them $8 - $10 to do it, plus I have a record incase of warranty issues.)

Anyway, they put the sticker on the windshield, indicating next change due 5000. The online manual says 3000 for oil 6000 for filter.

Re: oil change interval?

Automakers all have different miles for changing oil. If you want a sludgy engine then by all means wait longer to change it.

Honda oil change is 7500 miles before the first oil change because of the break-in additives in the oil from the factory. After that every dealer I know recommends 3000 miles.

Also with a Kia from what I have heard and plan on doing is a complete tranny flush around every 30,000 miles.

Re: oil change interval?

7500 is the recomended oil change interval for Hondas, even after the first oil change. If you read a Honda owner's manual, you will see what I'm talking about. 3000 is only recommended if you drive in severe conditions. The owner's manual for the Kia Sorento also recommends 7500 oil change intervals. Of course dealers suggest 3000 miles because the more often you bring your vehicle back, the more $$$ they get! Think about it. Just do what the manual says and you'll be fine. Why is everyone so obsessed with a 3000 mile oil change? Also, unless your vehicle is still under warranty, change your oil yourself. It's not rocket science and you will save some $$ over the life of your car. Plus you'll put more time and attention into the job than any mechanic at a shop would. He just wants to get you in and out of there. Just my 2 cents.

Re: oil change interval?

You can change the oil yourself even if it's under warranty.Take a look at the warranty book and it will say basic maintainence can be performed by the owner i.e. air filter, oil, cabin filter, etc.
Also that 7500 mile oil change interval is for schedule A.Schedule B,severe driving which it seems describes everyones driving habits, said 3000 mile oil change. It should be in the back of the owners manual.
All those warranty books are great reading and you'd be surprised all the people I talk to never even open them.

Re: oil change interval?

I switched over to Mobil1 almost from the very start on my '02 Sedona. I've used either Mobil1, or the Mobil1 extended, and a Mobil1 filter. I change it around every 10K or so. It has 66K on it now, and still runs like the day I drove it off the dealer lot. Never had it in for service; no mechanical issues to date. It just runs and runs and runs. Just last year I had to replace both headlamps - five years I would say is good life for bulbs for someone who drives with them on all the time. Excellent vehicle for the money; just wish they held some resale value.
