2008 Silverado Tranny

Does the new 2008 Silverado 1500 still have the same crappy 4L60E or 4L65E tranny or do they have an all new design ?

Probaly does and the 4L60E is not a crappy transmission,There is a recall on them, the windshield wipers and it is on the 2007 and 2008 models.GM found out the wiper system is catching on fire.

I wonder why they just didn't put the 4L80E in the 1500 models.

Re: 2008 Silverado Tranny

The 4L60E is a crappy trasmission for a pickup... Im on my second 4L60E, I would have upgraded mine but then would have had to change out my transfer case too (auto-trac). Its a car transmission, the 65E is a step in the right direction, stronger planetaries.

The 80E is a great tranny, incredibly strong. But also very heavy and a power robber. I would love to have the 6L80E that the Escalade and Denali have.

The 4l60e is a good transmission and I never seen a total failure.Only problems I they have are the sunshells breaking and last with regular fluid and filter changes.I know one improvement which the aftermarket is right and GM is wrong in the direct drum. There are 5 black springs in the direct drum and there is one thing to do with them: THROW THEM AWAY!Aftermarket says to throw them away and GM says to put them back in.Lots of clutch failure due to them 5 black springs, restricting the cluthes from floating which the aftermarket found out.

I have two crappy 4L60 transmissions and both have worked for several years with many miles and no failures....

If you think these are bad Look to ford/ram....these have problems...

spend the money for the 2500/3500 if you desire a work truck for contracting /plowing operations...etc... the 1500 is for boats , small campers etc....

If you're towing a trailer regularly, the 4L60E is no good. This is my personal opinion. Everytime I tow a trailer, the next day the tranny won't take off in D or 3, day after it will be fine.

remember that towing even small loads you must not be in D...only tow or haul heavy loads in 3rd...this will prevent the torque converter to lock and this then prevents the transmission temps from damaging levels...

The trucks do not have the 4l80e anymore, has the 5 speed Allison automatic if equipped with the 8.1 and the duramax diesel. The 4l80e is used in 3/4 ton and up vans
