2000 GMC truck freeway speeds sputters and dies.

2000 GMC Sierra 1500, 5300 Vortec SFI engine, extra cab stepside Z71. Began to need 2 hits of the starter to start everytime starting about 9 months ago. Today at Freeway speed just started to sputter and pop as if it were out of gas (1/4 tank left). Barely got it pulled over. Restart attempted multiple times but will lope a few second then die. No trouble with the truck since new until 9 months ago. Never serviced by dealer except for regular oil/filter changes and air filters all done by me. When I attempt a restart and then dies, I hear what sounds like fuel preasure relieving in the tank when I stick my head close to the tank. Since the fuel filter has never been changed, I will do that first but if that doesn't take care of the problem, can I assume it is the in tank pump and replace it? Dropping the tank seems more involved to me than just removing 6 bolts on the bed and sliding it back a foot to access the pump, is it more complicated than that? The pump costs 250.00 so I need advise please. Thanks in advance.

put some gas in the truck. GM has had several problems with the fuel level sensors reading a 1/4 tank and the trucks not starting. If the truck starts after fuel is added, replace the fuel level sensor. If it doesnt start, chances are it needs a fuel pump.

Re: 2000 GMC truck freeway speeds sputters and dies.

Maybe check fuel pressure before buying a pump?

Check static (motor off), idle with vacuum hose on FPR, idle with vacuum off of FPR, and on freeway pedal down (to check for acceleration enrichment / vacuum response).

Easy tests. Free. Save cash.

I know; not the American way. Buy tons of parts blindly, and don't fix it...

Thanks for your responses. I will check the tank level sensor. As for the fuel pressure regualtor, where is that located, what does it look like and is it by the engine manifold? Problem is, the truck won't sustain idle for more than 3 seconds now, lopey and weak at that. Thanks.

Get a fuel pressure gage on it first, 58-62 psi.

Bet money on the fuel pump. Keep your tank above 1/2 full to keep the pump cool.
