1997 chevy lumina abs light is on

My local dealer wants like $100 just to tell me why my abs light is on, so i was thinking about just buying a tool and doing it myself because i have another car with the abs light on too. The actron brakescan Cp449 only supports 2001 luminas. Does anyone know of an abs scan tool that does not cost an arm and a leg?

Go to Advance / Zone. They'll scan for free.

Check the spark plug wires for GOOD condition. ABS circuitry is very sensitive to radiation from spark plug resistance with too much resistance / NOT GOOD connections...

I have just replaced the plugs and the wires before the light came on.

AZ cannot scan for ABS codes. Check the wiring/connections from the front sensors as they come up thru the inner fender wells on both sides.

Open up the wiring harness going to the wheel speed sensor for a broken or corroded wire.

For what its worth, my ABS light was on for a long time.

I finally noticed the wire running to the front passenger wheel was sheared off at the connector to the wheel and had been tucked into the engine compartment.

I took the wire out (it unplugs just inside the engine compartment behind the engine on mine and passes through the inside wheel-well wall via a clip and rubber grommet thing).

The wire is a special kind (resists soldering, I think its steel or carbon impregnated with copper striping). I replaced the end by some heavy soldering and heat-shrink with some stranded silver-plated wire. This seems to be holding for now. (I had to dismantle and rebuild/resolder the connector too).

I was able to locate a replacement wire off another car at the wrecker, but haven't subbed it in yet.

I also had the ABS light come on again when I replaced a rear strut (see my thread here), and forgot to reconnect the ABS wire (one runs to each wheel and has a connector).

Examine each of these connections by carefully (use a screwdriver/needlenose pliers to remove and re-insert them).

Maybe you just have a bad cable or connection.
