Major Tranny Leak On Awd?????
I have an 02 Astro AWD and just took her on a 17hr trip to go pick up a new trailer for the business. About 14 hours into the trip (luckily on my way home), I started getting a weird smell, almost like burning rubber. Stopped at a rest area and noticed that the trailer was covered in oil. Looking underneath I noticed that from the rear of the transmission pan and all over the transfer case is covered in tranny fluid, however behind the transfer case only has oily residue and you can see the leak is not from there. I am just about to go over the whole transmission to find the leak, does anyone know of any trouble spots where I should concentrate my search. The output shaft going to the front is also covered in tranny fluid. I was able to get her home by adding about 2 quarts of oil. Tranny shifts fine and I cannot see any difference in handling. Just a big mess to clean on our new trailer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! |

Re: Major Tranny Leak On Awd?????
Check the cooler lines for rust holes. I just patched mine with a piece of fuel hose and 2 clamps. Works fine again.

Re: Major Tranny Leak On Awd?????
I will put the van on ramps in the morning and pressure wash the transmission. I will restart it and see exactly where it is coming from. If it is the cooler lines I will try your fuel line idea. At this point, I am about to have a clean van for sale real cheap! This van always seems to come up with an issue when I need it most.

Re: Major Tranny Leak On Awd?????
Probably front seal on the tranny. Cheep fix if you do the labor yourself.
