P440 Error code problem

okay I got a check engine light on today. So I stoped off at shucks on the way home to read the error code. it turns out to be a P440 Which means something like emisions control system failue. any Idea of what I should be looking at to repair this? or should this be a dealer repair?

That something is the evaporative system....most probably the purge solenoid valve, either stuck closed or partly open, broken, disconnected hose. This is not a no-go condition so save your money for a while. CLeaning the valve might do the trick. And often the light comes on but if the condition does not repeat for a while, it will fade off.

Hi I just bought a 2000 KIA Sportage, and it was running just rigth untill a few days back the check engine ligth turned on. I used an OBD II code reader and got the code P0440 (EVAP control System), I'm taking the car to the dealer's mechanic the next week, but I have to use my car at my work for long hours (I drive it for about 5 hours at nigth) so I wanted to know if using my car with that problem can damage the car or cause the car to develop other problems?

By the way, I got the code by taking the car to the emisions test with the engine ligth on . I think it failed the test just because it had the check engine ligth on, but I could be wrong, the test results page I got says that it passed the pressurization of the gas cap and then it says that the MIL is commanded on and that failed then they give me the trouble codes present (just the P0440) and nothing more. Do you think the car failed just because the ligth was on and they didn't want to do any other test because of that?

Hard to presume of their policies....but I lean on your interpretation.
P0440 is linked to the purge recirculation: check for proper electrical connections to the solenoid, then all tubing connected to it. (this is passenger side, between front of battery and radiator).
Mine also pops 440 from time to time....and I have not identified the exact source yet....I clear the code with my scanner, and it will take several weeks before it pops again....this is reported quite often and I think some freak condition can be a factor here..hard to duplicate....so I guess there is no problem all the time the code does not show.
