Post 93 lumina ignition module???

HI
My 1993 lumina 3.1 V6 stalls out somtimes while driving after seeming hesitant. But most of the problem is when I drive it and then shut it of for just a couple minutes then try to start it, it will not start. Then if I wait about 15 min. it starts. The cumputer brought up a code 42. And a mechanic suggested it could be an ignition module. Any suggestions, please.

Re: 93 lumina ignition module???

code 42 is electronic spark timing bypass fault, which basically means there is a problem in the circuit controlling spark. The crank sensor is the cheapest possible problem, the ignition module is the most expensive.

cant you do the screwdriver tap test on the ignition module like an ecm? it may not rule it out, but it may confirm its at fault.

Re: 93 lumina ignition module???

No, that test doesn't apply to ignition modules. The tap test works on ECM's because water intrusion loosens connections in the circuit boards and causes them to intermittently short out. The ignition modules fail due to overheated diodes/transistors, so the tap test doesn't apply.

Re: 93 lumina ignition module???

So what is harder to change? Ignition module or crank sensor? My problem is finding someone who can do it, and fast. Anybody know where the crank sesor is on a 93' lumina 3.1? Thanks.

Re: 93 lumina ignition module???

Good luck on both. the crank sensor is r/s rear of block, usually stuck from carbon build up, go to autozone.com/repairinfo to get info.

Re: 93 lumina ignition module???

I changed the ignition module and it sounds like it was running a little better. The mechanic said he took it for a drive and let it idle for 1/2 an hour. Then when I got in it put it in reverse then it stalled. It wouldn't really stall while driving just right after I put it in gear then tried to accelerate. Is it possible that just the fuel filter needs changing now? Thanks.

Re: 93 lumina ignition module???

There are a bunch of things that could cause your symptom. if it only stalls after teh car is warmed up, I'd say EGR or crank senosr. If it does it only when cold, fuel filter. If it does it randomly, I'd say ECM.

yes the crankshaft it self is at the rear of the block. but the the sensor it self it under the power steering pump and pulley.
