Volvo 940 vs 350Z...lol!

Sleeper FTMFW!

My Volvo (Dirty Svenchez) has been down for almost 7 months due to a severely cracked exhaust manifold and I finally got him running again. While it was down, I installed larger injectors (44 lb) and replaced the entire ignition system with new parts. I also installed a Forge CBV (same one used for the SRT-4's). I've been breaking him in the past couple days so the ECU can re-learn everything again. Finally it felt like it was running fairly well, and it was pretty cool outside - I just went test driving a few minutes ago to see how things were coming along.

I happen to pull up next to a black 350Z at a red light.

He sees my gauge on the dash, and he starts inching forward, trying to anticipate the light. When it goes green, he tests me...starting off and waiting for me to pace him, then speeding up a little and waiting again. I happily took the bait.

So he decided to punch it, I'm sure he was planning to leave me well behind.

I punch it a split second later, reel him in within a couple seconds, and comfortably pull in front...then I let off the gas so he can catch up.

I looked over to wave, but he just didn't want to look at me. It sucks losing to a 4-door 4-cylinder Volvo.

Info on my car, in case you were wondering: 1995 Volvo 940, TD04HL-15G, 3" turbo-back, chips, Hallman MBC @ 12psi, iPD turbo cam, 44lb Lucas/Delphi injectors, Forge CBV...and 198,000 miles on the original B230FT engine and AW71 trans.

That is a shit ton of miles on a car to be racing it like that. I would be waiting for the explosion every time I gave it gas! But hey, if the sucker is holding up, why the hell not.

Not exactly a legit "race", but you more than proved your point to him I think. Any idea what year? they made some major changes a few years ago I think...

They went from hardly being able to put two lengths on my old 325i to a flat 13 second car. Major doesn't even begin to describe it, lol.

As for the milegage...hehe...it's a Volvo thing I guess. Freaks me out too, sometimes, but nearly EVERYONE on Turbobricks running fast ET's has a 200-250k longblock. It's my daily driver which is why I'm only running ~12psi. I might put 100 octane in the tank and raise it to ~16 or ~17 on occasion (when I want to play), but it's rare. I don't want to press my luck and more than I already am!

With the mods that I have, guys will click off high 13's with a good launch...but launching this thing is not easy on crappy street tires. If you leave the line with just 1psi too much, it's nothing but wheelspin. 1psi too little and you don't go anywhere until 3000rpm.

Then, thanks to a 3-spd auto w/ OD, you can't run past ~110 because the trans won't upshift into OD and you run out of legs. If you let off the gas you get the extra gear, but then you slow down because you can't punch it, else it will kick-down into 3rd again.

So I try to race from a light roll...and ~30 to ~90 is pretty much all this thing's got.

bwahahahaha.... I cant imagine the three fiddy guy's reaction when THAT beat him. Holy hell, I didnt expect it to look like that. looks like my old 89' mazda 626

So at the track, the faster ones are all trapping below 110? or do they just pin it and bounce it off the biddy a few times as they cross the traps? Because that doesnt seem like a very good thing to have happen when you are racing!

R/T .932
60' 2.027
330 5.573
1/8th 8.574
MPH 81.42
1/4 13.402
MPH 101.14

...this is a typical "good run" for an automatic 740/940 Turbo with the mods I have, running ~15 to ~17psi. Stock is about ~7psi.

A lot of guys swap in a 5-speed, but this is my DD and I prefer an auto in SoCal traffic.

On a side note...I can't seem to post using Firefox...I click "Submit Reply" and it just sits there forever now for some reason. I had to open Internet Exploder to post this. Any ideas?!

I get that same problem ever since 3.1 but if you go advanced it will let you post.

Re: Volvo 940 vs 350Z...lol!

Have you personally taken your car to the track? I have never seen any Volvos like yours at a track and have been many times. You say you have a 14 second car. How do you know?

How heavy is that car? I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the Z didnt know he was in a race. I realize the older ones are slow but come on a Volvo. Is your car completely gutted?

I dont know, I just dont know...I think some research is in order.....

OK I'm back from research land. I found a guy with a 95 940 that ran a 14.0@100mph. Not bad except he had an upgraded turbo w/18psi, ported/polished heads, iPD VX3 cam and timing gear, 3" headers/downpipe/exhaust, upgraded ECU, 100 octane and a 50 shot.

Your car stock runs mid 16's... Hmmm, I just dont know...

^^Eh, though it may be ifffy, don't be presumptious about the whole thing. I know people with n/a SL's which aren't lite by any means with some mods that have done wonders. Especially if they are spraying NO2. However, I have also seen people who own a VR4 who have only managed to run a 14.3. Cars can be a tricky thing to judge.

I've run a 13.8 @ 99 best ET @ 17psi. Mods are listed, very much the same as the guy you found (I'm using a 15G, not an 18T). Head is bone stock w/ 198k miles, same as the block. No such thing as "3 inch headers" for a turbo car, so if the guy posted that, he's making crap up. There's no room for an exhaust manifold with 3" tubes, the turbo would be inside the fender. lol. "Upgraded ECU" is also fishy - there's no such thing really. There ARE aftermarket E-proms, which I also have...but there's 2. One for the ECU (fuel), and one for the EZK (ignition).

As for the nitrous...dunno. Certainly doesn't need it to hit a 14.0.

Also, the B230FT does not need port work to hit 13's. Past a 13.5, it helps a lot. Until that point, it's all boost (it's cheaper than headwork...lol). Or guys will swap to the 16V DOHC setup.

Anyway, you've listed about $2k worth of mods, tops. It doesn't take much to coax some decent power out of this engine, but it's all mid range TQ. They hit the wall at about ~240whp and the wallet has to be opened up a little wider to get past that barrier. But ~240whp will cost under $2k (stock is roughly ~140whp).

Here's a vid of a friend's car from Turbobricks.com. It's a 740 Turbo racing an LT1 Camaro:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdiaharWRMI

That 740 has the exact same mods, just more bewst...a lot of guys will run around with ~18psi, but I obviously can't do that on the 91 octane piss water they give us in SoCal!

Re: Volvo 940 vs 350Z...lol!

good enough for me. it was listed as 3" under headers/dp/and exhaust so it might not have the headers. the ecu was some piggyback something.

in any case if you did run a 13.8 why not say that instead of a 14 second grocery getter?

if it is running those times nice sleeper... i will be on the lookout for mid 90's 940's now...
