whirling sound coming from the rear

'98 4.0 with 184K

The sound is heard when coming to a stop, usually around 5mph or so. I opened my door before coming to a stop & it sounds as if its coming from my rear drivers side wheel. I hope its the hub & not the rear diff. My rear diff fluid is due for a change. I had the rear diff overhauled about 40k miles ago & the dealer tore a hole in my pocket. My rear diff was making a whining sound at that time & it could only be heard at high speeds.

I've tried pulling on the wheel once elevated to check for play, but it did not seem excessive. I'm hoping its just the hub.
