intake gasket leaks at exhaust on a 69 350
Hi my friend just replaced his intake manifold gaskets on his 1969 firebird with a 350 because there was a exhaust leak in the center where the intake meets the head. after replacing it he has the same problem. is there something missing he just put the gasket down on both sides . is there supose to be some kind of block off plate or something he should have at these exhaust crossovers? thanks for any help in advance.

Is it sbc or pontiac motor? What intake, like stock or what? What did the gasket look like in that area?

What did the gasket and surfaces look like in that area? Does the intake manifold make use of the crossover or not?

Re: intake gasket leaks at exhaust on a 69 350
thanks for your help, i went over to his house to look at it myself and figured out the problem. it looks like the person he bought the car from put a earlier model year intake on. it had a EGR valve i don't think there was one on a 69. as i looked at the intake where it meets the head it looks like the crossover port for the exhaust on the head is larger than the port on the intake and i was able to see a small space so he is going to buy a new intake. thanks for the help anyway.

Re: intake gasket leaks at exhaust on a 69 350
You have it backwards. EGR was installed on '73 and newer engines.
It sounds as though the wrong intake gasket is being used. If the heads are not the original '69s, the gasktets probably won't fit. If there's a "channel" above the crossover in the head, that appears to be a hole or port or something, you need the gaskets for a '72-newer. What are the numbers cast into the center two exhaust ports where they protrude from the head, below the valve cover? The date code for the intake is located near the thermostat housing, usually on the driver's side. It will have a letter and three numbers, on what appears to be a tag that has screw heads showing, but it's really cast into the intake. Provide the date code, too. I can pinpoint exactly what you have and what you need. There is also a two-letter code STAMPED into the front of the block, on the passenger's side front, that will indicate what the engine actually is. By combining the date code and the engine code, we can determine the CID, HP rating, etc. Jim |
