88 XJ Stalling

More recently now my 88 Cherokee has been stalling, but at predictable times.

Let's say that I take it for a 25 minute drive to the store and then it sets in the parking lot anywhere from 10 minutes to one hour. When I get out of the store and start it there is no problems, until I step on the gas to pull out of the parking spot and then if i let off of the gas pedal, it will just stall. So, I shift back into park (automatic tranny), put the ignition in the off position and restart. The Jeep will start, but as soon as it turns over, it stalls immediately. It does this a few more times until it actually stays running. Then I shift back into drive again and it acts like it wants to stall again but it doesn't (thankfully).

The scenario that I just described is what happens every single time I take the Jeep somewhere and leave it set - whether it be for minutes or hours. Plus, it only does this stalling thing after it has been started once and then shut off - it never ever stalls upon the first start-up. It has been happening more frequently and I'm in search of a solution. The fuel pump and fuel filter are fairly new. Any advice is appreciated.

1st guess: Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Otherwise, how long has it been since you had new plugs, cap and rotor?

Had an 89 that did the same thing. Turned out bieng the CPS, but you can check to see if the fuel hose on the fuel pup in the tank is loose. It could also cause this symptoms you described. Just tighten the hose clamps on the short piece of fuel line.

Stalling? How does it start in the morning? You said it does this everytime you let it set for a short period? DOes it actlike its flooded. WHat I'm getting at is a possible leaky injector. reason being, over night, the fuel in the cylinder has time to evaporate, but when it sets for only an hour or so the fuelis still built up in the cylinder and it takes two trys to clear it enough to let it idle. Once it does idle, is it smooth, or erratic. Does the exhaust smell rich with fuel? Get a guage and check your fuel pressure, it should be at about 32-35 psi at idle. Any more than that you could have a faulty regulator. IF you unplug the regulator (vac line & plug it) while its idling you should see the pressure go up to about 40 psi.
