Dorman Kit for P0171 P0174 TSB Valve Cover and Isolator Bolts
Dorman has a kit 615-177 that appears to have all the items in the TSB, however, I don't see green isolator bolts.
Does anyone know if it is all the improved parts? any luck using it? It is $75 at www.rockauto.com which is crazy cheap. __________________________________________________ ______________________ EDIT: 5/17/06: Yes, green bolts and all the updated stuff! Re: Dorman Kit for P0171 P0174 TSB Valve Cover and Isolator Bolts
IF you get what they show in their picture, it is everything that you will need. The six isolator bolts are shown in the picture but you can't tell if there is any color to them. If they are made by a Ford supplier, I think that the seals on each bolt should be green in color but if someone else made them, then the color might not be an indicator. I would like to know if those seals are the kind that will not react to engine oil and shrink like the old Ford black seals do before I would buy the kit. The price is excellent if those seals are good.

Re: Dorman Kit for P0171 P0174 TSB Valve Cover and Isolator Bolts
Jim,
I really would be a good deal. The only thing that would suggest they are the improved parts is the valve cover. What would be the point of replacing the valve cover with another old one? I'm going to call Dorman. Tom PS. I have a friend who manages a CarQuest and he sells lots and lots of Dorman isolator bolts, however, he has never sold that Dorman kit. |

Re: Dorman Kit for P0171 P0174 TSB Valve Cover and Isolator Bolts
Just talked to Dorman and Yes, these are all the new redesigned parts for the TSB complete with green rubber.
It is amazing that no one seems to know about this kit! I'll be ordering mine. Tom PS. Just found this on the Dorman site: http://www.dormanproducts.com/docume...SS_2006-03.pdf Last edited by MrCreosote; 05-16-2006 at 10:36 PM. |

Re: Dorman Kit for P0171 P0174 TSB Valve Cover and Isolator Bolts
I purchased the Dorman kit and made the fix about 2 months ago. Everything worked well and the van runs great. HOWEVER!!! I was just looking through my engine compartment and noticed that the rubber portion of the fuel pressure regulator hose is cracking and failing!!! The same goes for the rubber portion of the PCV line. It seems like a matter of time before I get a vacuum leak and these parts are only two months old. I was a little skeptical about using Chinese parts, but I got drawn in by money savings. My advice: if you bought this kit, use the original hoses if they are clean-mine were, but I chucked them anyway. Otherwise, I would spend the extra cash and by the materials straight from Ford. My worry now is that the isolator bolts and manifold gaskets will fail, and I will have to start all over. BEWARE! I will try to include pictures at a later date.

Re: Dorman Kit for P0171 P0174 TSB Valve Cover and Isolator Bolts
Wow,
That sucks about the cracking. I would suggest you call Dorman. I've got a contact name there which I'll edit into this reply tomorrow when I'm at work. One big question: was the new valve cover a simple rework of the old one? Could the old one be modded to the new spec - or are there a bunch of changes? Thanks Tom PS. Usually the aftermarket gasket companies were completely reliable. Of course I'm thinking Felpro. |

Re: Dorman Kit for P0171 P0174 TSB Valve Cover and Isolator Bolts
I would appreciate that contact from Dorman.
The valve cover has basically been modified. They attached a baffle plate to shield the oil from the PCV opening. They also have different mounting bolt setup with built in washers and seals--not necessary, but a nice feature. I did read about someone who was able to do the modifications himself (BATAUTO.com). It doesn't seem difficult, but remember the valve cover seems to be the major source of the major problem. Maybe if Ford didn't screw this up you wouldn't need oil resistant manifold bolts: bad setup all the way around. Also, the kit comes with a PCV valve which seems kind of chinsy. I will replace with Motorcraft. Moral of the story: buyer beware. Keep in mind that all of the parts in the kit are Chinese made--not Fel-Pro. If I was to do all over again (which I might be) I would go to Ford for the parts and put a little more pressure on them to help with costs because this seems to be an epidemic. |

I purchased the 615-177 kit from Dorman. Came quickly through Autozone but with no directions. I made contact with a tech at Dorman named Marty who described what I needed to do in excellent detail. The problem I encountered after reassembly was a very lumpy idle. Runs fine under load but at idle shakes the van. Has anyone had this? If so, what was the solution?
Thanks!! David |

Make sure there a no loose vacuum hoses or disconnected ones that were left unplugged (easy to do as it is hard to see around the back of the engine). Also check for hissing or any sound of air excaping thru the top (intake) of the engine.
