4 Runner fuel filter(s)

Good afternoon,

I've got a '98 4 runner with the 2.7 ltr 4 banger. Recent rough/stumbling idle has improved greatly with several shock treatments of concentrated fuel injector cleaner through the tank but there is still a slight hint of the original problem. Currently has 68500 on the OD. Books are packed away and I think it's time to change the fuel filter(s). Can someone reliably tell me where it/they are located? The help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Fuel filters don't normally need replacing. However, since you asked, it is under the intake plenum bolted to the side of the engine, middle - front to back. Your problem is more likely one or more injectors clogging than your filter.

Re: 4 Runner fuel filter(s)

Brian,

Thanks for the input. The engine continues to improve in smoothness and even running so I'm going to let things continue as they are going rather than start taking things apart (fuel filter). Additionally the tranny seems reluctant to downshift to passing gear when needed. Any ideas there? Thanks in advance!

Re: 4 Runner fuel filter(s)

Hey Joker,

I never went in after the thing. I opted for the cheaper and less complicated course of action and added STP fuel injector cleaner concentrate - enough for the 18 gallons of fuel the tank holds. It's worked fine so far - about every 3rd or 4th tank. Try it out before the mechanical option. Good Luck

Re: 4 Runner fuel filter(s)

Last winter I replaced the front fuel line and filter on my '95 4-Runner. It was a terribly difficult job as the fuel filter is located in a very tight spot. I still haven't gotten my left thumbnail back. At 155K miles, I didn't think it was a bad idea, but would not do it again.

Re: 4 Runner fuel filter(s)

I have to agree with Brian the in-line filter is probably not your problem and on the 4Runners it is a pain in the A$$ to replace.

Hey fourwd1 Howdy!! Even if you're wheelin what in earth are you doing to get dirt in the liquid gold tank?? Man I wanna ride with you!!!!
