AC Problem

I recently had the AC compressor replaced in the 1997 Astr AWD Van. It worked for about a week and now the compressor doesn't kick on. Any thoughts on what to check for? It blew cold for a couple of days and then went warm as well.

Re: AC Problem

Probably leaking refrigerant somewhere. That's why it started getting warmer and now there is not enough refrigerant in the system (or maybe non at all) so the low pressure sensor is preventing the compressor from starting.

Re: AC Problem

If I have a leak test done do they use dye for that? How much of a job is difficulty wise?

Re: AC Problem

Not sure on how leak tests are performed on an A/C system. When my system was leaking I just looked around with a flashlight and was able to see refrigerant leaking/bubbling at the compressor. If you can refill the system and look for a leak, it might be cheaper than taking it somewhere.... of course it depends on whether or not you can fill your system yourself.

Re: AC Problem

Make sure the elect. connector at the dryer is fully seated. After doing some work on my upper intake, my AC compressor did not kick in when the switch was turned on. I went over everything, and then one of the guys in he shop said "hey, shouldn't this be plugged in?" DOH! Worth a look.

Re: AC Problem

I seem to have two connectors at the cannister. Only one is plugged in. I don't know what the other plug is there for. Also, Is there one area that is more prone to leaking?

Re: AC Problem

I have the two connectors too. I believe one is for an aux rear heater...not sure though. I know it is not AC related since mine has the loose connector and my AC is working. I'm not sure if there is one particular area that leaks more than others, but the condenser is the most vulnerable to road debris. I'd do a leak detection with dye to find any leaks.

Re: AC Problem

I just had a leak test done and so far I'm showing no signs of the dye. The compressor did not engage. For some reason I'm not getting any power to the compressor. The mechanic checked the fuses under the hood and connectors and did some checking on the fuse panel under the dash. He's telling me the problem is somewhere behind the dash. What is behind there that would cause the problem? I'm going back on Thursday. Any thoughts? Is there something I can look for beforehand? Also the controls only work on the high setting, if that means anything relating to the AC.
