92 Buick regal Speedo work OD does not

3.1 with AC

Speedo works, but the OD does not.

Has not worked in almost 5 years, when we first got the car the OD would tick over a mile or two every 100 or so. But no longer.

I am wanting to figure out the MPGs it gets for a trip that we are planning, so I'd like to see if I can get it to work again.

Should I take the dash apart to see if there is debree in the OD mech or is it a known problem with a sencor/cable

i would think its a mechanical problem with OD.if your comfortable with removing it clean/lube it but i'd have a new 1 available.Good Luck

I have put 3 clusters in my '91 and I surrender. In every case the internal plastic gears are chewed up. They all died around the 120,000 mile mark so unless you can get 1 with real low miles they are garbage.Initial rip out and reinstall takes hours....then after 2 you become expert lol. It starts with the OD then the speedo needle goes nuts and cruise won't kick in, then nada.It's gone again btw at 122,000 miles.

Be careful of misdiagnosing it as a a faulty wheel speed sensor.
