98 Lumina, groaning fuel pump?
This problem occurs when it is over 90 degrees outside. Once car has been driven about 15 minutes, loud whining from back as it is stopped, goes away after about 5 seconds. If car is stopped for a about a minute (like at a stoplight) it dies, but restarts after sitting about 15 seconds. Also, there is a groaning and popping noise that sounds like it is underneath the back seat (feel free to insert joke). The groaning/popping noise can be heard with car in park, so it isn't suspension. Fuel pressure checked out fine, but that was idling in a garage. Ideas?

The pump should be tested under load, also a partially clogged filter can cause the noisey pump, or it is on it's last legs.

Follow-up: 98 Lumina, groaning fuel pump?
Replaced the fuel pump, or more accurately, the fuel pump assembly. The mechanic said the assembly sits in a baffle, and that was secure.
He said the fuel pump is inside a canister. Fuel from the canister is what fuels the engine, not directly from the tank. He said the canister only had a little fuel in the bottom, he said they are usually full. Anyhow, no noise from the back now. I've only driven it about 20 miles, but it has not had any problems. |
