K&N Air Filter (Worth it?)

Just curious if anyone here thinks its worth dropping in a K&N Filter.

I hear most people get 1-3 MPG increase out of it. I was thinking of dropping one in and drilling some holes into the bottom of my airbox for increased air flow.

I've read mixed reviews on other cars so id like to hear from lumina owners.

Thanks!

Re: K&N Air Filter (Worth it?)

I have gone thru a ton of different intake setups. first thing i did was converted the flatbed to a k&n cone. but had no heat sheild so i didnt get the full effect. i did notice a slight gain in power and an incredible sound that mixed fantastically with my flowmaster muffs. I then went on to putting the bottom part of the stock box underneath the cone to shield from some of the heat. wrong approach. the bottom is where most of the cold air is gathered. most of the heat is generated by the pipe right next to the cone. soooo, i put the stock box back in with a k&n flatbed filter, this is by far the best setup. fuel and power wise. as for drilling a hole in the bottom, dont bother. the stock box draws air from right behind the headlamp. there is a plastic flap right above that opening behind the headlight, i leave that open to draw more air in from the space between the hood and above the headlamp. i suppose you could drill holes in the bottom of the box, but what are you going to do when you hit a good sized puddle? all that water has to go somewhere, and the filter is the last thing you want drenched.

other setups i tried:
cold air intake: bought it from pepboys for $70. the issue was running it somewhere to draw in air, there is limited space to do "anything" and the water issue played into affect here.
tried using a smaller cone "5 1/4 inch", didnt like the sound.
tried using a bigger cone "9 inch", no heat protection. but they do offer heat shields for this one, providing you have the cone with a 3 inch opening. this one was 4 inch and working in adapters was a chore, it left the whole intake just hanging.
this lead me to try different intake pipes, tried all filters with both the chrome pipe and the stock accordian.
to sum it all up, stick with your stock box, buy a flatbed K&N and open the flap. simple, effective, and cheap.

if its more power/torque you're looking for, here are some ideas;
better spark plugs and wires, but stick with champion
free flowing exhaust: magnaflow converter + flowmaster muffs
peformance chip: 60degreeV6 offers a good one at a good price
180 degree thermostat and lower cooler fan times to maintain a more constant temperature.
and if you have a ton of money to waste, crank scrapers and lifters.
you could go a step further and get better pulleys.
oh, and stay away from additives in your gas and oil. and keep those injectors clean...

hope this helps...
