1993 starts then dies. Possible ECM problem?
I have 1993 Lumina that for a long time had a problem, that whenever it was driven for a while the service engine soon light would come on and stay on till the car was turned off and then turned on again. And sometimes when I drove up to a light and stopped the car would die all of a sudden but started right back up when I turned it over again. Then it got so bad that after 5 minutes of driving the car show the SES light then die soon afterwords. And now it hardly starts. I replaced the ECM thinking this could be the problem and now it starts, but after 1 minute of sitting idling it dies. And then if I try and start it again it starts real rough (almost like its backfiring or not getting enough gas) and dies soon after. Its weird it starts perfectly fine and runs good for about a minute when you start it cold, but after a minute of warming up it runs terribly then dies right away. I tried crossing the A and b terminal with a paper clip to see if there was any error codes stored and all I got was code 12 I believe. I thought that might be grounded somewhere on the ECM or maybe it needs a new fuel filter or fuel pump. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to AF, test the fuel press at the rail, especially when it dies, 37 psi. Try and scan it and get the code when the lite comes on also.

Re: 1993 starts then dies. Possible ECM problem?
I had ECM pronlems with my 1993 last year. But it would just die cruising down the road and then not start. Come back in a hour and it would fire right up and go for weeks, then suddenly do it again. After doing it 3 times in one week, I took it to a shop that I know a former GM techs owns. He uncovered the ECM, started the car and tapped the ECM with the handle of a screw driver and the car died instantly. Said it common with these cars.
