Plans to upgrade my computer

I plan on upgrading my computer in the coming months, I'm on a budget, around $700-$800.

I am currently running an ASUS P5NSLI, 3 gigs of 667mhz RAM, Intel C2D e6400, BFG 9800gt OC and Fatality Xtremegamer PCI soundcard. Lately my computer is chugging in games, I don't get over 40 fps in most if not all of my games. I was content with getting 30 fps but when I'm chugging in Company of Heroes well....I can't stand it anymore. Which is sad because I recently bought Aliens vs Predator and the only way to play it is at the crappiest resolution...and my monitor is a samsung 24", so the resolution that I enjoy to game at is 1900 x 1200.

Which platform is a better bang for buck? I use my desktop mostly for gaming...so, should I go with the AMD Thuban core or go for an i7? Or should I just try overclocking my CPU?

I hope this doesn't cause a flame war here, because I really am not interested in AMD or Intel loyalty, just the better bang for buck.

Its just a preference, i have always had better luck with intel products holding up longer than AMD processors. Thats just my exp though.
