I replaced the alternator 8 months ago, everything ran fine.Have not driven since then until now. Engine cranked right up but started to smoke and I noticed the serpentine belt was not turning even though the car was still running. If not the alternator then what? Any ideas ? When I replaced the alternator I noticed a pulley at the bottom of the serpentine was spinning a little fast almost freely, but I don't know what that pulley is. Please help! thanks

Re: 98 lumina ltz
Take the belt off and see which locked up. Could be any of them. Most likely one with a grooved pulley, flatsiders don't usually have enough traction to stop the belt unless something slick is on it. That would be alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump.
But you'll have to take the belt off to find out which.
