Porsche 924 Group 4 - Martini

This is an old Monogram 1:24 scale kit. It is very simple and needs some work to make it look convincing. I removed the body side mouldings and reduced the size of the US spec rear bumper. Some filling was also needed:





I have never seen a real version of this racing Porsche so I think it may be made up? I have seen the 924 Carrera GT in race versions but not this one. But I really like the Martini livery and decided to go with a silver colour scheme rather than the white version on the box because I preferred it!

I binned the kit wheels because they were a bit rubbish and replaced them with some Fujimi ones. I had big problems when I added softener to the decals initially!





I tried leaving it for what seemed a long time but it still looked rubbish. I then tried a hair dryer and had success!



I then did the clear coat 2 weeks later and disaster yet again, all of the creases re-appeared!



After this problem I concentrated on detail stuff.

I used a permanent marker pen for the outer of the rear lights and the front driving lights. Black BMF was used for the separating lines on the rear lights. This needed Microscale BMF adhesive because it did not work without it.



I also used the marker pen for the rear and front window surrounds. The moulded in wipers looked awful so I did the best I could with the pen and painted the bottom of the screen black as on the real car.





The chassis is very basic with moulded in details. I just did some careful painting and dry brushing:



I used old 1200 grit wet and dry paper on the bodyshell 2 weeks after the clear coat decal nightmare followed by Meguiars scratch remover and polish and I am pleased with the result!:

Looking good.Very nice 'save' on the decals they came out very nicely considering those wrinkles you got.

The wheels looks great!! Which Fujimi kit you took the wheels from?

How did you get rid of the wrinkles after the clear coat? Also what decal softner did you use (Microsol)? Awesome progress, keep it comin.

The wheels were bought as a set from Hobby Link Japan. They are Volk Mesh type. I painted the centres gold and gave the bolts a light wash.

I did use Microsol (and now wish I hadn't). I have since read tips on this site and in future will only use it if absolutely necessary. I think the decals were very thin which is why they wrinkled so much.

To get rid of the wrinkles after the clear coat I waited for 2 weeks for it to harden then used well used 1200grit wet and dry paper on the whole bodyshell. I kept doing this until the marks disappeared. I think it worked because I put on plenty of clear and therefore did not burn through it during this process!

I have made a lot of progress since my last post.

Here are some pictures of the interior. I added some blue Sparco seatbelt because I think they go well with the Martini colours.

It is 99% complete now so I will be adding it to the completed thread too.

My friend, you have done a terrific job on this unusual porsche classic racing car. I have this one on my "to do" loooong list and your build it's making me going out of my modeling schedule to start to "play" with it.

Did you just use a regular permanent market ???..you had no problems applying it???

Yes, just an Impega black permanent marker. No problems applying it. If I made a mistake I removed it using Meguiars scratch remover applied with the end of a cocktail stick of which I made the end a more rounded shape. It worked quite well.
