2.2 No start, eating my lunch! HELP!!

Hi im new. Let me try & pick ur brain before mine xplodes!!!! 2000 gmc sonoma, 2.2L, automatic trans. Engine replaced w/25,000 mi. motor in Nov. Worked great!! then broke flywheel. Returned to mechanis who installed engine & repaired. As soon as i left started cutting out like running outta gas. noticed smell of fuel & light black smoke. gettin worse since. about 8mpg, no power, blk. smoke on idle, worse if you get on it, which does nothing but slows mph. At a constant speed 45mph if u put it in neutral engine climbs to 3500rpm. in gear rpms fall like cutting out. tapping pedal is only way to accel. Always very rough jumpy idle and almost stalls to leave red lights. wont go over 45 & takes well over 2 minutes to get there. in neutral wont rev above 3000rpm. has never stalled or not started on 1st try. tried spraying tb clealer in it. Engine stalled & has not started since. changed plugs, wires, cleaned iac & egr. removed & cleaned intake, injectors. #2 &#3 injectors were dirty. it is getting fuel, and plugs are firing. compression good. pulled valve cover, all good. I have checked vacuum lines, fuel regulator, filter, idk im ready to make a small fire & push her down a cliff!!!! help plz!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 2.2 No start, eating my lunch! HELP!!

Ptroper testing by someone that knows what they are doing.
Sounds like you need to find a good repair shop.

Tips on finding a good one.

Check around Ask around
Word of mouth.
Family friends coworkers neighbors business people and delivery people.
Mailmen and parcel delivery people get around and notice a lot of stuff.
Even a good parts house knows what shops are good and not good.
Chamber of commerce and better business bureau and city hall.
If you find a good referral to a repair shop go look them over and talk to them.
Look for a clean looking busy place with nice people running it.
Ask a few questions and ask about their qualifications and training.
Not all places have trained tech/mechanics.
If they do not find a place that does.
Even all dealers do not have all trained techs/mechanics.

I am not familair with your vehicle but let me ask you, how well is it firing?? Can you take the plug wire and shoot fire 2-3" and what color is the fire if you look at the plug? I would remove the coils and igniton module and get em tested as a precaution unless you are getting great firing. That ignition system should fire blue 2-3" period. If not maybe your problem. Just a thought.

The fuel pressure is high.
Specs 41-47. Should be around 45 cranking.

As far a good advice.
I Already gave that.
It needs proper testing by somone that knows what they are doing.

If you are going to DIY it start with the proper testing not throwing parts at it.

Codes do not say sensors are bad.
They say to check them out.
Check
Good spark and good fuel pressure and injector pulse and compression to start with.

Are the spark plugs wet or dry on the end.
Good AC-delco plugs right?

Re: 2.2 No start, eating my lunch! HELP!!

Thanx guys. okay so now i ohmmed plug wires all 8.0 -8.2... coils show 6.2 ohms each.Should be between 6 & 30 ohms right? boutta go get dem hoz tested & ignitioin control module to be sure. Let ya kno win i do. Ok now As far as shooting spark 2- 3", yeah, about 1- 2", but looks blueish or white, sometimez orange. the father u hold the plug the weaker it seems. idk... Oh & plugs are AC Delco platinum. They are only slightly wet even after 15- 20 cranking attempts... Does that help???

Re: 2.2 No start, eating my lunch! HELP!!

I could be wrong but I think you may have a plugged catalytic convertor. you can get a gauge to measure back pressure or to do a quick check you can remove the O2 sensor to create an exhaust leak and see if you can get a high sustained rev out of it. normally with a plugged cat the engine will stall if you try to hold a high rev for a couple of seconds.

Re: 2.2 No start, eating my lunch! HELP!!

It is rare that the coils would both be bad...usually what happens is that one SIDE of a coil fails and the other fires weakly, so you would maybe have 1 dead cylinder and one weak one at worst. Still should start unless ignition module tests bad. Not a bad idea though to replace them anyway as you would need to later most likely. All should fire strong, no yellow.

Re: 2.2 No start, eating my lunch! HELP!!

Thanks for the tips, everyone. About the plugged cat DAB77, I had actually thought about that already & have the exhaust unbolted where it connects to the cat. I just forgot to add that to my list of attempted solutions in my post. Good idea tho....

Re: 2.2 No start, eating my lunch! HELP!!

Its running. However I would like to get it back to normal. Once it started was not smoking, but after 2-3 minutes, black smoke still coming outta exhaust, which is still disconnected from CAT. Idle still not constant, fluctuates between 800- 1000 rpms. Sounds like its loping... But before it would shake the whole truck and bounce, between 450-1200 rpms at idle. Have yet to road test, to c if it cutz out while at a constant speed. but get up is 95% better. oh no SES on dash or dtc's....
