Pontiac engine problems

I live in BC, canada and just had an aircare test done to my care which is a 1995 pontiac sunfire. The results came back that I have high hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide outputs. I have also noticed recently that my engine tempurature will remain constant in the middle of the thermostat while driving but if I am stopped for a period of time the temp gauge will rapidly increase to just under the yellow point then decrease and repeat. is there any solutions you can think of and is it possible to give an estimate on how much you think it will cost to fix.

Talking Re: Pontiac engine problems

Hey mate....that sounds normal to me. During stop and go driving, when the temp reaches a certain reading ( ?? not sure, but it is over 200F) the fan will come on....then cool the water temp, bringing it below the turn-on temp, thus shuting off the fan....this will repeat especially in stop and go driving.

One thing you could do...and I have seen it posted..... install a by-pass switch to turn on the fan manually. So when you are in Stop and Go driving...you turn it on for continous running.

High hydrocarbons and CO... When was the last tune-up ???

Cheers Mate, have a Fosters !! Life is good!

Re: Pontiac engine problems

have your cooling system flushed and refilled if it has not been done for a few years. Coolant could be getting weak and or rad maybe stating to plug up. check your catalytic converter maybe it is going south/plugging up resulting in higher temps as well as your other problem
