The 2005 has rear drum brakes.

PS: No question is stupid. Perhaps it is if NOT asked.

The shoes should be checked at least once (I have my van's shoes checked twice) per year.

As the majority of the braking process happens to the front brakes, rear brakes take longer to wear.

Regular parking brake service should be done twice a year (IMHO) at the same time the drums and brake shoes are inspected.

Rust builds up on the rim of the drums and when too much builds up it becomes very difficult to remove the drums to service the brake shoes.

A parking brake that sees very little to NO use can cause overheating to the brake shoes and drums.
If this happens, the drums can crack and the pads turn hard and stop proper function.

What I mean with that is, if the parking brake rusts up due to non-use (and it will) and then it IS activated, ( IF it goes on) it may not release enough to let the brake shoes separate from the drums.

Hope that helps.

Bah! The post edit won't work.

I just wanted to add that depending on brake usage, you may need to have the brakes serviced more often. Eg., severe service, as in a lot of braking in constant city traffic.

If you don't use an independent shop/tech, I'd advise you to shop around for one as they can save you money.

Ask friends, co-workers, or relatives where they go and if they are happy with their shop.
