Post 1985 Celica GTS needs a home

I have an 85 Celica GTS. Red, black/grey interior that needs a home.

The car has probably somewhere around 200+k on the odometer. As far as these cars go, the body is in pretty good shape.

Hatchback Celica's had a problem with rust around the back window/bottom of the hatch. Mine has that problem, but not as severe as most. The drivers door was hit and dented and was repainted, but other than that the car has NEVER been wrecked. Has all her original parts and paint. Still in good condition. All lights work, including pop up headlamps. All light covers are intact and not cracked or broken.

Right now, the only problems for this car are:

Brake Booster leaks around the pushrod from the brake pedal. Means you have to top off the fluid reservoir every so often. It should be replaced, but I never did. Just kept filling the reservoir since it was a slow leak. I did replace the master cylinder thinking that was the problem. But it wasn't. So the master is new for the most part.

The rack in the rack-n-pinion is loose and needs to be replaced. The car will not hold an alignment until this is done. I just bought cheap used tires and didn't worry about it. This can be replaced new for about 300 bucks or used for about 150.

The AC does not work. It has freon leaks, and as well, the wiring inside the car has been removed accidentally. (never let an idiot install your stereo) The blower motor stopped working a while back. It has heat, but there is nothing to blow it with. An easy repair, but I don't care for heat so I never bothered with it. Just wore gloves and a coat in the winter and kept a towel to wipe the windshield clean.

The motor in this car is very strong still. Never has used a drop of oil and to be as old as it is and as heavy a car, it pulls very well. It's a Toyota.....treat em right and they last forever. No leaks in this engine either, except for the brake cylinder. Not a drop on the ground. She never did leak oil or throw oil.

The clutch was slipping a little the last time I drove it. Clutch was replaced a few years ago so I doubt it is going bad already. I'd be willing to bet it just needs adjustment. I had to adjust it a couple of times when I was driving the car before I replaced it. The speedometer does not work because of a cheap plastic gear in the tranny that is way too expensive to keep replacing. It will work for a few months if you replace it, but then it shears off again. Because of the no speedo issue, the cruise control doesn't work.

The interior is not in the best shape, but I have seen worse. The cloth fabric has had it's day. But not horrible either. The dash has a crack in it on the passenger side. The drivers seat broke and I replaced it with just a plain Celica seat that's brown but has a cover on it. I couldn't find the GTS Sport seat to replace it with. Too bad, those are comfortable seats. But this one works just fine.

I stopped driving her a couple of years ago...just too expensive to have two cars. Insurance, license and reg and tag fees and maintenance. I have a brand new battery which I keep charged for this car. Every now and then I take it out and throw it in and the car fires up on the first turn of the key and RUNS. No stalling or hesitating.

This would be a great car for someone who can work on it and fix it up a little. Just an in town car, work car, whatever.

I don't want to part with the car really, but I hate to see her sitting there rotting away too.....when I know someone could get some use out of her.

I'm only asking 500 bucks for the whole deal. I have all the papers and keys etc. Of course, the car is sold as is. No warranty or guarantee. Once you buy her, she's all yours. I am not hiding anything from anyone or pulling a fast one. As far as I know there is nothing bad wrong with the car and it should run for a while if she's taken care of and not driven hard.

Summation:

Car NEEDS: brake booster, a couple of tires on the front and a fan blower for the defrost/vent system.

Car can get by without, but should have soon: A rack for the front end suspension, a little body work on the hatch and a radio.

If you're interested shoot me an email. I can not deliver the car as it has no tag or registration. If you want it you'll have to come get it and take it with you.

I'm in Birmingham Alabama.
