Question about OBD1 on 95 K1500

At this point in time, when I hook up a jumper wire to my OBD1 jack, I get no codes (flashing SES light). If I go to a garage and hook up to a diagnostic computer will it pull different types of codes for my truck, other than the flashing SES light) or will they simply go off of the flashing SES light to determine if something else could go wrong in the future?

Re: Question about OBD1 on 95 K1500

Let me clarify, I get the usual code squence "12-12-12". So to say I get "no" codes isn't quite right.

They would more than likely use a scan tool to retrieve codes. They could use the paperclip method, but I always use a scan tool.

Is your SES light on? What do you mean "if something else could go wrong in the future?"

Re: Question about OBD1 on 95 K1500

Basically, do garages use scan tools to diagnose symptoms your car may have, even though they may not be severe enough to trip the SES light? Or would they go solely off of your car shooting out codes?

No my SES light isn't on...

Re: Question about OBD1 on 95 K1500

After reading my post I realize how confusing it sounds. Let me simplify it like this:

-Does the OBD1 scanner that garages use for 95 model and below supply the different codes that you can't get with the paperclip?

- Does the computer on truck supply more indepth information that can only be pulled out by a scanner?

Re: Question about OBD1 on 95 K1500

I don't know if there are any codes other than what would be reported with the paperclip method.

There are powertrain parameters that can be looked at with the scanner when the engine is running to compare to what is expected, timing, map sensor reading, injector pulse, throttle position sensor, and more.

The OBD2 vehicles have different codes, some wont even turn on the light because they are not considered emissions related.

If they exist, the scanner should

- Does the computer on truck supply more indepth information that can only be pulled out by a scanner?

Definitely yes

Re: Question about OBD1 on 95 K1500

My next question would be: Where can I pick up an OBD1 scanner for my 95?

This would work, I am sure actron has a few models that would work too

Re: Question about OBD1 on 95 K1500

I read over the features for this item. Do you think it would allow people to make adjustments, through the computer, to the engine/transmission?

By the way, I would never do that myself. I do not know enough about it.

Re: Question about OBD1 on 95 K1500

Most do not, especially the auto xray and actron. The Tech 1 and Tech 2 and some of the OTC and Snap-On may allow for some testing procedures like openning a linear EGR valve or forcing the trans into a certain gear.

I have the auto-xray 6000 scanner, there probably isn't much difference in the cheaper scanners-just don't buy one listed as a code reader if you want the other powertrain info
