2001 LeSabre electrical problems

Hello, all!

Don't know if the title was correct for this problem, but here goes. This happens when I'm idle or in park and the engine is running. When closing or opening windows, I feel the engine struggling a bit. Let's say I hold the button to open the window, once the window is open, I still hold the button down, the engine struggles and vibrates a bit, I've also noticed the tachometer needle drops a bit and if eveything happens at night, you can see the lights dimming a bit. Sounds like it's a problem with the circuit.

Don't know if the problem is stated clearly, please let me know if clarification is needed.

Re: 2001 LeSabre electrical problems

I have had this happen before on cars. Usually on a winter night with the heater blowing the lights on and possibly the radio playing.

From what I understand this is an alternator issue. Your alternator is trying to keep up with the load.

As alternators age they are able to produce less and less current. Therefore you see dimming lights and slower wiper blades etc.

If you step on the gas you will see the lights brighten and the wipers go faster. This happens because your alternator is turning faster and therefore producing more current.

I agree it is probably the alternator. If you have a meter, check the voltage. Start the car and put on all the accessories, and it should be putting out 13.5 volts, or thereabouts. I haven't had to do this in years, newer cars may be different, so someone feel free to correct the procedure described if necessary.
