96 Lumina Alarm/Security Problem, Won't Start

greetings all!!!

hope somone can help me, i have a 96 Lumina with 3.4L and i've had more than my fair share of problems with this car. last night, i needed to put new front pads on, so i started up the car in the driveway (which started normally as usual), and pulled into the garage.

i jacked up the front end, pulled the wheels, did the brakes, let it down and got ready go for a quick test drive. i went to start it - nothing happened, like there was no battery in the car at all, but the 4 ways and the dome light were flashing at a rate of a flash per second or so.

i played with the remote several times locking/unlocking the car with the driver's door closed and open, and after a few minutes i got in and it started right up, no problem.

i went for a drive, everything was normal, new brakes were great, and i shut it off in the driveway at home. went to restart after 10-15 seconds or so and the 4-ways/dome light start flashing again and the starter won't crank or make any noise at all, just like before.

for a while now, i've had a stuck key in the ignition switch, it won't come out. although undersireable, it's not a big issue for me with this car they way i use it, and it's pretty expensive to fix, so i've left if alone for now. i've also had an intermittent starting problem where i drive it in summer or winter temps, long miles or 3 minute trips to the store, and when i go to restart, it's completely dead, just like last night when i did the brakes, only the 4-way flasher and dome light never went off before. it's always restarted 100% of the time in those cases after 5-15 minutes or so of just sitting dead in the parking lot.

outside of any answers you guys might have for this problem, here's my questions:

1) can the factory alarm/security system be reset? (there are no aftermarket alarms on my car.)

2) can the factory alarm/security system be completely disabled in any way?

any help from you guys is greatly appreciated.

Later!!!

Re: 96 Lumina Alarm/Security Problem, Won't Start

my 92 had a security prob as well. i had to replace a relay switch for it found under the glove box "not in it". you have to remove some panels to get to it. you may want to haynes this to see where that relay is. that is if that is the prob. its worth looking into.
in fact, the way mine used to be; I had to turn the wheel to the left, then to the right, then turn the right turn signal on before turning the key.
grrrrrr

Re: 96 Lumina Alarm/Security Problem, Won't Start

well, it appears the problem has healed itself, everything is working "normal" again, and with this car that's the norm...and the relay that was clicking when the lights were flashing was under the glovebox like you said, so maybe that's it...

if it acts up again, i'll look into that relay, that helps narrow things down a little bit, thx for your help.

Better to do it now, than later as nest time it might be needed NOW!! not later.
