over drive problems

What makes a dodge jump in and out of overdrive when the overdrive is
on and you hit a bump in the road? Sometimes it jumps out without the overdrive being on and with overdrive on also. This is a 2 wheel drive vehicle. This problem has been going on for
a while now and I am at a loss as to what I should check first. Can anyone
please help me?

Re: 1999 dodge rt dakota

Have you checked the connectors on the trans and the harness from the trans forward to the eng compartment. Might just have a loose connecton somewhere;or a wire rubbing and bare in that area.

Re: 1999 dodge rt dakota

It may be a reaction to the anti-lock brakes engaging. If the rear wheels hit a bump and the antilock system detects impending lock-up, it can send a signal to disengage the O/D to reduce power to the rear wheels.
