01 Blazer 4.3L won't start (park/neutral switch?)
Hey guys, I've been scouring the internet for days trying to solve this problem. Here's the deal.
Sometimes my blazer will start just fine. I hop in, turn the key, engine starts and life is beautiful lol. Then randomly, I jump in and I don't get anything. It's not a low battery problem. I've gotten it to start on occasion by switching back and forth between park and neutral, trying on each on going back and forth until it starts. Sometimes that doesn't work though. I've sat there for 20 minutes one time trying to start it and got nothing. However I walked away from it for about an hour, hopped back in and boom it starts. So to clean that up a bit, my problem is sometimes I turn the key and nothing turns over (no starter clicking, it's like trying to start the truck in Drive. The dash goes dark but nothing spins or powers up) I've got some other problems that aren't that major at the moment but as I was surfing the net for this problem I found a post somewhere that had exactly the same problems as me however no one replied to it If this helps at all this is what has failed on my truck. First the heater stopped working. The fan would only blow cold air. Then my 4HI started not working intermittently. I'd click the 4HI but it won't do anything. Doesn't blink just stays in 2wd. 4LO seems to work fine. Also the AUTO 4WD works, well at least the light goes on solid when I select it. Now on top of that I'm having the starting issue. I don't know if any of those are connected, but like I said I found a post somewhere out there with someone that had all those problems, in the exact same order. So, any suggestions? Also, where the heck is the park/neutral switch? I have the Haynes manual but it isn't very clear on where it's located. Thanks! |

Re: 01 Blazer 4.3L won't start (park/neutral switch?)
The P/N switch (range selector switch) is mounted on the left side of the transmission. The electrical connectors on the switch (there are two) are fairly well sealed with a waxy sealant, making them reasonably impervious to water, but also very difficult to remove. I've found that applying gentle heat from a heat gun will soften the sealant enough to allow removal without complete destruction of the electrical connectors.

Re: 01 Blazer 4.3L won't start (park/neutral switch?)
Sounds more like a heat soaked starter problem to me. From your description, it seems to start ok when its been sitting around and cooled off. If thats correct then replace the starter.

Re: 01 Blazer 4.3L won't start (park/neutral switch?)
You need to get a test light on the start wire at the starter.
If 12 volts on it in start position check starter or battery voltage to starter. If no 12 volt on start wire then work back threw the nuteral saftey switch and ign switch. Remember the starter circuit also goes threw a fuse and starter relay. Any add on remote start or anti theft stuff?

Re: 01 Blazer 4.3L won't start (park/neutral switch?)
Hey thanks a lot for your quick replies guys. There's no aftermarket remote start or security stuff. Just the stock security system (I think there's a chip in my key?) I'll run the tests you all suggested the next time this happens and let you all know.
