no heat and its freezing!

well, left my car sitting for about a week cuz im in college and had a killer parking spot. went to start it up yesterday and once the engine got warm i turned on the heat. the fan kicked on in engine bay but the blower didnt. i could feel some heat coming from the vents but no matter how high i turned the knob, nothing came out. any hits on what i should check?

Re: no heat and its freezing!

Sounds like the blower resistor card. Usually it only gives you the 2 high or the 2 lows, but I have seen all 4 go out. It's not hard or expensive to replace, go get one at the wreckers, inspect the card surface before you buy it to make sure none of its burnt, because thats what happens, parts of the card get burnt and the circuit becomes incomplete. To replace, its inside the car, where your feet would go in the passenger side, should be attached to the blower motor itself, youll see I think 2 7mm screws, its a tight squeeze, but take em off and unplug the card and pull it out. Hopefully this is whats wrong, I was in a car without heat a few weeks ago and its -18 C here, its not fun lol.

Re: no heat and its freezing!

checked them both. fuses look good and didnt really know what i was looking for with the cards. they looked okay, but i could be wrong. there is a salvage yard pretty close to here so i might just go and grab a couple. then again it is still under warranty, but i checked and they would still charge for labor, so its proly worth doing it myself. thanks guys, any other ideas on what it could be lemme know

Re: no heat and its freezing!

seems odd that all speeds would go out at once, give the blower motor a slap maybe it is stuck or about to seize. If you are going to change blower motor resister buy a new one ,they are not that expensive and it is a pain in the ass to change. You wouldn`t want to do it twice.....lol. Some stuff I say buy bone yard this isn`t one of them.

Re: no heat and its freezing!

yes, i tried it today and they are a pain in the ass to change, especially when my 6'5" self can barely fit in the car as it is and i dont have any tools but a screwdriver. i cant even get under the dash without hanging out of the car into the street. im just going to take it in and pray to my parents for a dif car. third time its been in the shop in the past year and i think the differential is going out on top of that. so i think it might be time for a new ride. cavies are fun and i thought they were reliable and i love mine but maybe i just got a friday car.

6`5" in a cavalier........guess you`re not claustraphobic.........lol. Get an Impala or Mailbu ,so much more room and mileage is comparable IMO

Re: no heat and its freezing!

haha yea it gets a lil tight sometimes, it saves on gas mileage though because no one else can fit in the car along with me in it. my parents just said to take it in and they are going to see what the repair charges are like and will go from there. as for the malibu/impala. naah.... i hate the malibu, all years, and the only model of impala i like are the 94-96 ss's (proly my favorite car). if i were to get another car, i would proly lean towards a vw gti or si hatch. dunno why but i like hatches. proly cuz i want/need more room but i want the sporty-ness of a car.

Re: no heat and its freezing!

Did you check the relay in the fuse block in the engine bay? The easiest way to check is: you pull out the relay labled "heater blower" and put in the relay from the one labled "cooling fan". If the heater starts working then you know the relay is bad. Just make sure to put the cooling fan relay back.

Re: no heat and its freezing!

i know its been a while but i thought i would just update and let everyone know what was going on. took the cavy into the shop a couple days ago and just now got it back. turns out the whole blower seized and had to be replaced. worked one day and the next it just seized up. good thing it was under warranty
