Help! I have a 1998 EB All Wheel drive . I have a clicking/clunking noise comming from my left front axel area. The noise is intermittent and is variable with the spped of the truck right down to the last rotation of the tires. It happened about 3 months ago and as i puuled into my repair shop, it stopped. It has just started again after it was in the paint shop for a fresh coat(looks great) Wheel turn from lock to lock seems to make it better at times and worse at others. The truck has 140K and runs fine otherwise.
Seperate isssue is my cat converter and Evap system OBDII are showing not ready on my last inspection. Inspector said it could be from a system reset i did with my scanner from that morning. Thanks, Dedhead63 |

Re: 98 AWD Clicking sound from front
as far as the clicking sound it sounds like a bad cv joint. try to wobble the axle and see if there is any movement. as for the evap and cat monitors not ready for the inspection it takes a certain number of start cycles for the sytems to check out ok. I know on mine the evap monitor took a few days of normal startups before the scanner showed that it's system was ready/okay.

Re: 98 AWD Clicking sound from front
I agree that the noise is quite possibly due to a CV joint. However, you'll certainly want to have the rotating assemblies in the front inspected to make sure there isn't a wire or something laying against a driveline component somewhere.
As for the EVAP readiness state, clearing diagnostic codes will reset the Readiness monitors. If your scan tool can monitor the I/M Readiness, which most scan tools can, that will let you know when you can take your car in for inspection. Just don't reset the codes while you have the tool connected. The owner's manual for your scan tool may also explain the process to complete the readiness tests. It often involves a certain cycle of full throttle acceleration to 45 mph following by 5 miles of cruising, then coast to 20 mph, blah, blah, blah. Or, you can just drive normally for a week or so. If what you have is a simple code reader rather than a scan tool, it probably won't have the readiness monitor. -Rod |

Re: 98 AWD Clicking sound from front
Thanks for the post.
I found out that the noise was a bad front drive shaft. My shop was able to find a place to rebuild the old one to save a few bucks. The system codes are like you said, they need to reset on their own during regular driving. thanks again. |
