Unhappy Remote oil filter adapter

I recently purchased a used 99 Tacoma with a 3.4 V-6 at auction. There is quite a severe oil leak at the adapter on the block where the oil filter would go. The filter itself is mounted in the left wheel well. I cleaned it off with brakecleaner and can see oil coming out where the adapter meets the block. Does any one know if this is a factory or aftermarket part and what size o-ring is in there. I'm taking it to a garage to have it repaired and want to have the proper seal for him. The ports for the hoses go straight up out of the adapter if that makes any difference.

Re: Remote oil filter adapter

The oil filter is moved to the wheel well to allow easier removal of the filter from an otherwise difficult location. The filter itself is stock. I saw somewhere on the internet a discussion on moving the filter to the wheel well and the adapters used but I can't seem to find it again. I need the seal for the adapter to the block

Re: Remote oil filter adapter

I got enough stuff out of the way to get a good look at it. I cleaned it off with brake cleaner and a rag and started it up. The oil came pouring out much worse.Turned out the adapter was loose on the engine. I managed to turn the adapter with a screwdriver between the hose barbs and there were some metal tabs on it to set the driver blade against and then tap with a hammer to turn it farther clockwise. Now I'm worried it can loosen up again when driving down the highway. Any ideas?

Re: Remote oil filter adapter

I was going to suggest checking the adapter to be sure it isn't loose. It should be OK, maybe it wasn't tight enough when installed. Most of those kits use an O ring type seal. It's easy to find a replacement if you know the size, not sure if they all use the same type seal. I'm not a big fan of remote oil filter kits unless it has high quality fittings and hoses. If any part fails it will dump your oil and damage or destroy your engine. Look at this Perma Cool kit.

It has push on adapters that secuered by worm drive type hose clamps, probably the hose is low grade. I wouldn't install one of these kits on my vehicle.

If I were to install a remote kit I would get one that uses a common bigger filter. The Toyota filter is very small and adding extra hoses increases the distance the oil has to be pumped to get to the engine, a bigger filter would help.

My 2 cents,

Clifton
