General A/C Questions

Right now I do not need the A/C to work in the car... its mainly used for work....(high miles)

When the A/C compressor is replaced what kind of oil should be used for an r-12 system? I heard its mineral oil... Where can I get it. Is regular mineral oil from the drug store ok? Autozone only sells ester oil.

what is the best way to add the oil to the system? I don't really care if the A/C works... Right now I just want to make sure the compressor won't freeze up on me.

Will the compressor work ok with just the oil added and no r-12? I use the Deforst in the winter months.

Thanks for any help

Re: General A/C Questions

The oil is not mineral oil. You can purchase a recharging kit that has the oil incorporated in the can with the refrigerant. You will need to purchase a conversion kit as R-12 is no longer available and you will need to put R-134 in the system. Secondly, if the refrigerant is low then the compressor will not kick in when the AC or defroster is turned on so don't worry about adding the oil until you recharge the system.

DON'T USE MINERAL OIL AS IT WILL RUIN THE ENTIRE SYSTEM.
