HELP! How do I figure out my timing belt issue?
I really need some help any knowledge would be GREATLY appreciated!
I have a 1995 DOHC 3.4L in a monte. I could not for the life of me get the belt on the pulleys/cogs? What the deal? I retracted the tensioner and actuator but no room to squeeze the belt on. I did finally get the belt on but when I released the tools holding the cams, I turned the engine manually and it started to walk off the pulleys/cogs. What the heck? Do I need to replace the pulleys and tensioner? THanks very very much! |

what holds the belt in position is usually the crank pulley, assuming there is no lips on the cam sprockets or idlers
Some belts are just tight as hell. I'm not familiar with the 3.4L, but thats just the way some are. Assuming all the idler bearings are good, I wouldn't worry about it.

Sounds like you need to recheck the alignment of the belt on all the pulleys as it sounds one of them isn't on straight. Whether it's a serpentine or v belt neither should "walk off" the pulleys. If it's on straight on all the pulleys then either the ribs or just the groove in the pulley keeps it straight.
