I have a 1997 Cavalier 2.2L. It has been running perfectly fine. Was sitting at a stop light and when I pressed the gas to start when the light turned green. It started to go for less than a second, and died. I tried turning the car over again, and only the starter was cranking. It was not cranking slow or fast, it was cranking normally. Problem was, it wouldn't start. I tried this several times and no luck, had the car towed back home and this is what I have. Battery is charged fine, trying to turn over and getting nothing. I can unplug all of the spark plug cables from the car (of course marking which goes where) and try turning the car on and get the same results. I keep trying to turn it on and it just keeps whining as if it wants to start, but it won't. I can smell fuel up front after trying several times. And I can hear the fuel pump turning on. Don't think it is a fuel problem. All of the lights on the dash come on and they don't dim out or anything when attempting to start. I have checked all fuses, cleaned the contacts on the battery cable. The only other odd thing I noticed is when I have the key turned to the on position that I can hear a high pitched noise which seems to be coming from the alternator. I unplugged the quick connect wire to the alternator and the noise stops. Please, any ideas I would appreciate, I don't know what else it could be.
Thank you, -Paul |

Re: 97 Cavalier, will not start. PLEASE HELP!
Becarefully not to burn out your starter. They say on in 5 secend intervals you should try crankin it when its not starting.
Id grab a knockometer( pernounced knock-om-eter) and tell you car to start or else. Sorry I cant be more help to ya. |
