Diagnostic trouble code 34 is Driver Side Air Bag circuit Low Resistance or shorted. The connectors for the air bag and the air bag sliding contact have
metal spring clips that act as shorting bars. The shorting bars are there to ensure that the air bag will deply if the connectors come apart on impact. One of the possible reasons the light is on is that a poorly mated air bag sliding contact connector may not push the shorting bars back into their fully retracted positions.

Disconnect your battery for at least one minute and leave it disconnected while working on the air bag. The shorting bars are inside of the back of the electrical connections to the bag. Pull them apart and push them HARD together to fully retract the connection of the shorting bars. Clean with alcohol before
sliding them back together again. The resistance across the shorting bars is 1 ohm so the connections need to be clean and tight.

I'm guessing that you didn't push the wiring connectors together with enough muscle to get the shorting bars retracted. Take it back off and push the connectors together really HARD!

It sounds like Davescort97 has been there before. His diagnosis and suggestion is right on track. If that does not correct the problem, then you may actually have a wrong airbag as you suspected or a poor connection further down the line.
Here is a link to the code chart for your vehicle in case you come across any other issues.

This website gives you the procedure for diagnosing and resetting some systems without a scanner. Some vehicle manufacturers accommodate that (like Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infinity, Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda & Mercury) and some require a scan tool. http://www.airbagsolutions.com/

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident. Most systems can only be diagnosed using a scanner designed for the airbag system, however some use flash codes to indicate the problem. The scanners at Auto Zone or the ones that sell for @ $50 will not access the airbag system, only the engine systems (check engine light).
Check out these websites also for more info on airbag systems and the light.
