Oil Filter / So Many Stories & Not The Right One
OK Simple right get the right filter WRONG I've gone to many auto stores over the last 5 or 6 oil changes and have used the compleate gament of oil filters 1. I read alot about the crap one's that you should not use becauce of problems...problems..... OK forget that
2. THE BIGEST PROBLEM I HAVE IS some stores say use this one "it's about 3.8 inches long (SHORT ONE) and other stores say your using the WRONG filter, use this one about 5 inches long ( LONG ONE ) WHATS THE DEAL WITH THAT ? I think it has to do with room by the external oil filter BOSS with respect to the truck having 4 wheel dirve or 2 wheel drive well I have a 2003 chevy S-10 crew cab 4 x 4 vortec 6 cyl motor I have used both no problem with respect to room WHICH ONE SHOULD I USE ......?????????? 3. I have decided I'm going to use a K & N oil filter problem is they say to use the (SMALL ONE) about 3.8 inches long for my truck And in my head I'm thinking the better one would be the (BIGGER ONE) 5 inches long I'm I wrong for thinking that ( I thought it would filter the oil better ) THANK YOU FOR ANY AND ALL HELP !!!!!! |

Re: Oil Filter / So Many Stories & Not The Right One
Size makes no difference.
It is what is insde that counts. You best is the AC Delco. And usually a better price. MT

Big or small makes no difference.
It is what is inside. On a GM Use the AC delco oil filter.

Re: Oil Filter / So Many Stories & Not The Right One
If it's SAE certified and listed for use on your vehicle size doesn't matter, just go for the lowest price. MT-2500 must have stock in AC Delco

Re: Oil Filter / So Many Stories & Not The Right One
As MT Pointed out with the research link, surface area matters (which is size)
If they all pass the SAE Flow test, then the filter that can hold the most material will protect your engine the best for the longest period of time. If you religiously change your oil and filter every 3K or less, then the capacity of the filter is meaningless, as they will all hold 3K worth of crap. Nonetheless, I Use Hastings and have for since 1966, so I guess I have been lucky that they rate right up at the top. On the whole, AC/Delco parts are the closest to OEM in appearance and quality, so I would go with them if I couldn't find a high quality item at Lower cost. I recommend NAPA parts as they are the oldest and have the longest track record for supplying quality parts. Now if only MW could do a little better on the weekend. |

Re: Oil Filter / So Many Stories & Not The Right One
Wix probaly makes Napa's oil filters.I know my father will not get anything from Napa,Sponsorship is on a Toyota.CarQuest also makes the best parts and they made one right move, switch to Delphi for their fuel pump supplier and ditched Airtex.Napa's fuel pumps are made by Airtex and Airtex pumps are junk.My father gets parts from CarQuest and Auto Value because they deliver the parts and Napa does not in my area.Look in any of the parts boxes from Napa and Carquest, some parts are from GM and Ford and are more money than the dealer.iT is the same part

Re: Oil Filter / So Many Stories & Not The Right One
Personally, I don't put too much stock in anything relating to the Society of Automotive Engineers. They are still using a nearly 100 year old system for grading lubricants, whereas the rest of the world has long since moved on to either an ISO or SSU system which is actually relative to the real viscosity of a liquid.
Further, because a particular piece of hardware advertises itself to "Meet SAE Standards" that means that it might just BARELY meet whatever arbitrary standard SAE could have published. It doesn't mean it's the best choice. I'd rather have a filter which can trap smaller particles instead of barely meeting minimum qualifications. I'd rather have a filter which can flow more cold without presenting a significant pressure differential across the element of relief. I'd rather have a filter with more media to hold more contaminants instead of plugging within 1500 miles and going directly to bypass.
