Ok here is what you need to do, remove the radiator cap drive the truck with the 6.5 out from under the cap, pull a gm truck that doesn't have the 6.5 in it under the cap, install the cap on the new truck, problem fixed. Sorry I am not a fan of the 6.5. Have you checked for trouble codes?

I have similar problem with mine, I’m going to try replacing the shut off solenoid on the injector pump when I get time. I think it could be sticking closed when hot.

That could definetly be a problem, is there a way to check the solenoid when it does happen?

Last night the truck wouldn’t start after a run. As I was at the house I was able to investigate more thoroughly than previous times like in Home depot parking lot.
The solenoid seemed to be working ok so I decided to open the bleed valve on the fuel filter and discovered no diesel coming up the line while cranking. The problem, the electric pump, which is situated inside the chassis leg under the drivers seat. It seems most times the injector pump can deliver fuel it’s self. In my case the wire connector to the pump had come undone I reconnected it and it fired right up.
I would suggest the next time you have trouble check for fuel at the filter bleed screw, if you don’t see any check the electric lift pump.
Hope this is of some help.

Re: 99 6.5 diesel inermittent problem

look into an FSD cooler, could be the fuel solenoid heating up, I think that when it gets a certain temp it shuts off if too hot, look at this site
