Question two tone paint & urethane

hey guys! I'm building a 33' Willys drag and it is a two toned paint scheme.

the roof is black primer and the body is orange.

I am going to mask off the roof cause I don't want any shine to it.

If I spray a urethane clear over the body will it crack once I take the tamiya mask off? or should I use tamiya clear?

how durable is the urethane in an application like this? will it be more apt to leave a hard edge because it's a thicker paint?

I can't understand why you couldn't do the opposite: matt black over clear, so you'll forgot troubles you'll find masking a rough paint. (So hard edges is more a problem of undersurface - mirror or rough- than of the uretanic over) . Or at least a thin coat of matt clear so you'll manage the shade of matt desired.

For my experience and for the stuff i own (unbranded 2K industrial uretanic I got from a friends) TS13 is much more "decal's&paint cracker" than any other stuff, despite I still loving its appeal.

Re: two tone paint & urethane

This is a tricky problem. I don't know whether primer will stick to urethane clear, so I wouldn't take the chance of painting primer over it, even if you sand it first.

Urethane clear is extremely tough and pretty flexible. It won't crack. (It's also very, very hard to strip.) No worries there.

If it were me, I'd paint the top along with the rest of the car - same primer, same color coats. I'd generally try to avoid painting the top, but I wouldn't mask it off until I was ready to clear the main body. By doing that, you'll keep the difference in paint thickness to a minimum, e.g., no "hard edge." After all the color coats are applied, I'd mask off the top and clear and polish the body.

Then I'd finish the rest of the car! The works, including the windows, wheels and all the trim and stuff.

There's no point in painting the top until you're done handling the car. Any handling of the car is likely to rub the top and damage the matte finish. Putting masking tape on a matte surface will also smudge it. So just leave it unpainted until the very end.

So... after everything else is done, I'd mask off the whole body (except for the top, of course), and spray a narrow line of thin TS13 to seal the tape. (It's actually compatible with clear urethane. I've used them together.) Then apply flat black or grey paint to the top, followed by a coat of matte clear.

Remove the tape, and your car is done.

Does this make sense?

Superb!

What kind of matte clear did you use? It's VERY matte.
