4 speed with over drive gear?

im looking at getting a '89 f-150 4.9L it is a manual and has new clutch. im just wondering about the transmission. on the shifter it goes 1,2,3,4,D,R is the overdrive actually 5th gear? or is it just a gear u can shift into when towing? the truck runs good and everything. and is their a term for leting off the clutch before u push the gas and the truck stalls when you are starting out from a stop? i am a beginner for a manual transmission.

Yes the overdrive is 5th gear. That overdrive will save you a lot of gas in highway driving if you're just driving empty or with a light tow. That '89 should be a reliable old truck if it was well maintained. I have an '88 F-150 4X4 with the same engine transmission combination. The term when taking off and it stalls from you not giving it enough gas, all I can ever remember it being call is killing the engine or killed it. For some reason that vintage F-150 is harder to learn to drive with the 5 speed. It seems like first gear is geared too fast. It took me a long time to get on to not killing it and I had been driving standard shifts for many many years. How many miles on the truck? 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive? How much are they asking for it?(if you don't mind saying). Good luck with your truck, if you buy it.

Re: 4 speed with over drive gear?

it has 150,000 2wd, they want $1300 for it, rust around the wheel back wells and on each door their is 1 spot of faded paint. i tell my dad cause i turn 18 next month that if i get it, i would put work into it cause i know how to do body work and am going for mechanic in college. and my friend just redid his wheel wells and sand blased his bed of his 94 f150. so i can always go to him for some help. when me and my dad took it for a test drive the batterydied on us acouple of times cause it is dead(because they said it had been sitting for 3 months). when we switched to one tank the truck kept on dying (i think is water in line or something) but over all it ran fine.

on the issue of when you switch to that tank. that sounds more like a fuel pump mounted in that tank. and be forewarned that if you do get it you do not want to drive around with less than 1/4 of a tank. that was the cause for the pump going out in the first place. i have had it happen many times on my 92 F-250. thats just my on the matter. but dont let that stop you from buying it if you really want it.

I agree 100%. I also follow the no less than 1/4 tank rule. The way I read it, the fuel cools the pump by submerging it. Is that your reasoning snake? I have never had a fuel pump failure on a fuel injected vehicle following the no less than 1/4 tank rule.

that and the fact that you will draw all of the junk from the bottom of the tank, especially if the truck has been sitting for any large amount of time

Re: 4 speed with over drive gear?

the tank that had the problem was full it said on the guage. i switced it over before we started the test drive like 5 min before we left to the road. it ran for like 10 min on the full tank. then is started acting up after the first time i stalled the truck. and also when i go from 1st to 2nd the gear shifter feels like it has just a strain when going into second(like a little click feeling) my dad thinks the syncro might be going. would this be caused by the syncro. the transmission has a new clutch in it. he also thinks that when they put the new clutch in that they didnt get the adjustments right. is their an adjustment for this problem so i can just take it to my mechanic and have him do it.

i dont know about the transmission problem, but as far as the tank thing goes the pump was going out when the tank was filled, sometimes the truck will still idle with a pump that is going out, trust me when i say it has happened to me many times in the past. your mechanic will probably agree with me, only other thing i can think of is try changeing the fuel filter 1st

There is no adjustment on the clutch, PER SE. This clutch is hydraulic and self adjusting as far as FREE PLAY is concerned. If the clutch had a mechanical linkage, one would have to adjust the free play in the clutch. You need a certain amount of free play so the pressure plate can release fully and squeeze the clutch disc between the flywheel and itself. But also so the throwout bearing doesn't turn all the time and quickly wear out. Now here is a very real possibility. Whoever installed the clutch may not have gotten the hydraulic clutch bled properly. In this case you would have too much freeplay. With too much freeplay the throwout bearing won't push the release arms on the pressure plate far enough to free the clutch disc so the input shaft on the transmission can stop turning so you can shift gears. If the clutch is bled properly, when you are stopped and in first gear, the truck shouldn't start to move until you let the clutch pedal out about two inches(estimate). Have I got you thoroughly confused yet? Post back with any questions. Edited: I originally stated throwout bearing in one place where I should have said pressure plate.

The plastic knob on top of the lever? Mine does that too on my 1988. With a little imagination there would be a number of ways to fix that. JB weld it, but I wouldn't do that, too hard to remove. Stuff part of a toothpick or similar under it. Put some kind of gummy stuff under it. You get the idea. If the entire shift lever swings side to side too much, that would be a different story. still usually a fairly easy fix. PS: Does your clutch seem to be working okay?
