4 speed with over drive gear?
im looking at getting a '89 f-150 4.9L it is a manual and has new clutch. im just wondering about the transmission. on the shifter it goes 1,2,3,4,D,R is the overdrive actually 5th gear? or is it just a gear u can shift into when towing? the truck runs good and everything. and is their a term for leting off the clutch before u push the gas and the truck stalls when you are starting out from a stop?
i am a beginner for a manual transmission. |

Re: 4 speed with over drive gear?
it has 150,000 2wd, they want $1300 for it, rust around the wheel back wells and on each door their is 1 spot of faded paint. i tell my dad cause i turn 18 next month that if i get it, i would put work into it cause i know how to do body work and am going for mechanic in college. and my friend just redid his wheel wells and sand blased his bed of his 94 f150. so i can always go to him for some help. when me and my dad took it for a test drive the batterydied on us acouple of times cause it is dead(because they said it had been sitting for 3 months). when we switched to one tank the truck kept on dying (i think is water in line or something) but over all it ran fine.

Re: 4 speed with over drive gear?
on the issue of when you switch to that tank. that sounds more like a fuel pump mounted in that tank. and be forewarned that if you do get it you do not want to drive around with less than 1/4 of a tank. that was the cause for the pump going out in the first place. i have had it happen many times on my 92 F-250. thats just my
on the matter. but dont let that stop you from buying it if you really want it.

Re: 4 speed with over drive gear?
the tank that had the problem was full it said on the guage. i switced it over before we started the test drive like 5 min before we left to the road. it ran for like 10 min on the full tank. then is started acting up after the first time i stalled the truck. and also when i go from 1st to 2nd the gear shifter feels like it has just a strain when going into second(like a little click feeling) my dad thinks the syncro might be going. would this be caused by the syncro. the transmission has a new clutch in it. he also thinks that when they put the new clutch in that they didnt get the adjustments right. is their an adjustment for this problem so i can just take it to my mechanic and have him do it.
